Tips for Building Community Support
Focus on actions that you can take in your community: Clearly identify the current state of the justice system in your community and the impact funding cuts have had.
Research organizations in your community: Think broadly about types of organizations, and diverse constituencies that you know have a stake in meaningful access to justice in our state?
Build on personal relationships: Are there individuals in the legislature with whom you have a personal relationship who are more likely to listen to your concerns about the justice system.
Take action and speak up. This webpage provides a template for your own communications, whether it is a personal letter or e-mail to a legislator, a letter to the editor or opinion piece, or for a short talk before a local group.
Face to face is effective: If you want to have a meeting with the organizations, be prepared to be flexible with dates and times. It is often easier to build on an already existing commitment - is there a meeting of an organization already planned that you could attend and give a short presentation? Could you submit an article to an organization's newsletter?
Use reliable and credible resources. The Bar's webpage will continually provide updates on the developments and coverage of the court budget issue, as well as the impacts being felt by underfunding. The Bar Association is a reliable resource to supplement your own knowledge and experiences.
